17 Must Have Christmas Books To Add To Your Collection

When I think of my favorite Christmas memories as a child, one of the first that comes to mind is of the warmth of the fireplace and big blanket wrapped around the christmas pj’s adorning me as I read many of my favorite Christmas books by the light of the Christmas tree. Reading plays a big part in the Christmas spirit coming alive for young children and families alike as they become part of the stories they read. These 17 must have Christmas books were all on my Christmas bookshelf growing up and hold many special memories for me. In this Christmas classic, all the animals are eagerly preparing and awaiting for the arrival of Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus. A sweet book that portrays the true meaning of Christmas.

4. The Year Of The Perfect Christmas Tree By Gloria Houston

This is a touching and joyful story about family, courage, and the perfect Christmas tree.

5. I’ll Be Home For Christmas (A Toot and Puddle Story) By Holly Hobbie

The day I discovered Toot and Puddle is the day I discovered some of my all-time favorite books. The illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning and the many stories of Toot and Puddle (including I’ll Be Home For Christmas) are sure to be a children’s favorite. They are funny, inspiring, feel-good stories about pig brothers who have all kinds of adventures together. This Christmas classic features Toot going away to a family reunion in Scotland, but promising Puddle he will make it back to Woodpocket in time for Christmas. BUT a huge snow storm hits, and Puddle just might not make it back in time!

6. The Christmas Miracle Of Jonathan Toomey

The beautiful illustrations and touching storyline make this a book you must add to your Christmas collection. Jonathan Toomey is the town’s best woodcarver, but he never laughs or smiles at anybody. He keeps to himself, and nobody knows of his painful past as he’s lost his wife and child. Everything changes though, when a widow comes to have Jonathan carve her a Christmas creche, and wants her young son to stay and watch.

7. Annika’s Secret Wish

This is a beautiful story with breath-taking illustrations that takes place in Sweden. Annika finds the traditional almond in her rice pudding, which will grant her one wish. She discovers that it is more blessed to give than to receive in this inspiring Christmas story.

8. How The Grinch Stole Christmas By Dr. Seuss

A timeless classic by Dr. Seuss about how the Christmas spirit can grow in even the coldest of hearts. A perfect book for young and old alike, the perfect family classic.

This book is a wonderful and entertaining way for you and your family to learn about what Christmas looks like all around the world. An educational classic with beautiful photographs to show traditions, festivities, and the celebration of Christmas in a variety of ways.

10. Eloise At Christmastime by Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight

Oh, Eloise! My sister and I are obsessed with Eloise. I first received my Eloise books as a young girl from my Aunt and Uncle for Christmas and have still yet to outgrow her 😉 In fact, I have a dream to visit The Plaza in NYC at Christmastime, which is where this story takes place! Eloise will capture your heart in Eloise At Christmastime. 

11. A Charlie Brown Christmas By Charles M. Schultz

A Christmas book collection wouldn’t be complete without A Charlie Brown Christmas. This wonderful Christmas Classic is all about the true meaning of Christmas, featuring your favorite peanuts characters!

12. A Very Marley Christmas By John Grogan

Marley is a lovable pup who is always getting into mischief. Follow his adventures as he brings some spunk and spirit to Christmas and hopefully doesn’t ruin it all before Christmas day arrives!

13. Home For The Holidays (Hallmark) By Heidi Tyline King

This book is chalk full of beautiful photographs and  creative ideas for the holidays. From easy decor to activities to start this year with the family, this book has it all!

14. Christmas At Long Pond By William T. George

A sweet story about a father and son who find the perfect Christmas tree. This book is great for discovering more about nature during the winter for young minds.

15. Josie’s Gift By Kathleen Bostrom


After losing her father last Christmas during the Great Depression era, Josie seeks to find joy during this Christmas season and finds the true meaning of Christmas.

16. The Candle In The Window By Grace Johnson

Gunther refuses to celebrate Christmas as he has lost his wife and child and is not in the Christmas spirit. He know feels he needs to prepare for the Christ child, but is only met by other visitors coming to seek help.     Yes! This makes me smile- so many happy memories!! I’m so glad you included The Year Of The Perfect Christmas Tree- I’ve always wanted to hike up into snowy mountains to get a balsam tree thanks to that book!
